Menang Drive and Albany Highway interchange complete

What's happening

 Project Update – April 2025

Menang Drive is approaching its one-year anniversary. The project is taking thousands of heavy vehicles out of the centre of Albany each week, reducing congestion and improving safety. In recent months, the abutments of the bridges at Albany Highway and South Coast Highway have been painted and feature striking artworks, designed by Great Southern artist Nikki Green. Painting is currently underway at the Frenchman Road interchange, which will feature a design from fellow local artist, Glen Hegedus.

Each artwork draws inspiration from the angles and tones of the surrounding landscape, including the Stirling Ranges, the Porongurups, King George Sound and local rock formations.

In the winter months, revegetation activity will recommence on the southern section of the alignment, particularly around the interchanges at South Coast Highway and Princess Royal Drive. New rope crossings for possums will also be installed at four locations along Menang Drive and at a fifth location on Carlisle Street.

There will also be a significant improvement to the local cycling route from Albany CBD to the Torndirrup Peninsula, with the extension of the Grey Street shared path to connect with the Hanrahan Road interchange. These works, which are being delivered by the City of Albany, will enable cyclists to travel from town to Frenchman Bay Road without having to interact with heavy vehicles.

In the meantime, planning is continuing for a new flyover at the intersection of Menang Drive and Chester Pass Road. Construction is anticipated to begin in the Spring following a procurement process. Once built, the flyover will complete the Albany Ring Road route, creating a free flowing route from Chester Pass Road all the way to the port.

Revegetating Menang Drive – October 2024

The revegetation program for the southern portion of the works between Lancaster Road and Princess Royal Drive, commenced in August 2024, and comprised of weed control and initial planting. Approximately 25 per cent of vegetation has been planted. The remaining vegetation will be planted over the next two winters (2025/2026). Our contractor, Decmil, will be responsible for ongoing maintenance of the vegetation during this time to ensure the establishment and survival of new plants, trees and shrubs. Please see our latest Fact Sheet for more information on the revegetation program.

New flyover to connect Chester Pass Road and Menang Drive, maximising the benefits of the Albany Ring Road

The State Government has committed to construction of a new flyover at the intersection of Menang Drive and Chester Pass Road. The project will complete the Albany Ring Road project and provide heavy vehicles with a non-stop connection from Chester Pass Road to Albany Port.

The project will allow southbound vehicles to exit Chester Pass Road via a new elevated ramp, which will pass back over the top of Chester Pass Road in the form of a bridge and connect into Menang Drive westbound.
