Traffic Escorts

Traffic Escorts play a critical role in the safe movement of high-risk, Over Size Over Mass (OSOM) vehicles throughout Western Australia.

A Traffic Escort Warden (TEW) is required to accompany a Restricted Access Vehicle (RAV) which is in excess of 5.5 metres in width and/or 40 metres in length, unless specified otherwise on the Single Trip Permit or within the Single Trip OSOM Vehicle Standard Operating Conditions.

The TEW will accompany the oversize vehicle in a Traffic Escort Vehicle which has red and blue flashing lights on the roof, "Traffic Escort” displayed on both sides of the vehicle, and signage on the roof to alert other road users of the approaching oversize vehicle(s).

TEWs are responsible for:

  • Preparing a journey management plan
  • Submitting a Green Light Corridor request, if required
  • Conducting pre-movement safety and compliance checks in line with permit requirements
  • Escorting the oversize vehicle(s) for the duration of their movement whilst on public roads
  • Completing daily reports, vehicle logs and other administrative paperwork related to the Oversize vehicle(s) movement

Further Information

Oversize / Overmass Transport Management Plans

If your movement requires an Oversize / Overmass Transport Management Plan (OSOM TMP), the plan must be submitted to Heavy Vehicle Services (HVS) for review and acceptance before you submit a Traffic Escort Warden booking application through TESSS.  Review / acceptance of an OSOM TMP can take up to four weeks, refer to the Guidelines for Preparing an Oversize Overmass Transport Management Plan for further details.

Any Traffic Escort Warden booking application submitted through TESSS without an accepted OSOM TMP (where required) will be cancelled, and the applicant will be notified to resubmit once the OSOM TMP has been accepted.  The OSOM TMP reference number is to be included in the application to HVS.

Single Trip Permit Requirements

Applications for Single Trip Permits that require a Traffic Escort Warden will only be assessed when the following details are included in the permit application:

  • The OSOM TMP reference number (where applicable); and
  • The Traffic Escort Warden booking number

For Main Roads to issue a single trip permit at least 4 business days prior to the time the services are to be provided, the single trip permit application must be submitted a minimum 7 business days prior to the time the services are to be provided. Applications submitted within 7 business days may not be processed within the required timeframe, which may result in the services being cancelled or scheduled departure time / date being delayed.

Note that the number of Single Trip Permits issued must correspond exactly with the approved booking.  Additional Single Trip Permits cannot be added to an existing booking and will not be issued under that booking reference.
