Standard Design Brief

1. When to Use the Standard Design Brief (SDB)

It is proposed that the SDB is to be used for roadwork design projects and bridgework design projects costing more than $454,545.45 (excl. GST). For design projects costing less than these amounts the ETS and BDS term contracts respectively have been assumed would be the mechanism for delivery of these design projects.

2. How to Customise the Standard Design Brief

Section 1 of the SDB contains project specific standards and Section 2 contains standard clauses.  For each sub-section within Section 1 and 2, a contact (custodian) name has been provided. This person will on a regular basis (say every 2 - 3 years) update their sub-section of the Brief.

The sub-sections in Section 2 of the SDB each relate to a different design discipline. The Principal's Representative will be able to build up Section 2 of the SDB in a similar fashion to a Tender Document, by only selecting the sub-sections in Section 2 that are relevant to the project. Section 1 and 2 of the SDB will need to be customised by the Principal's Representative so that it meets the project requirements.

The SDB has tried to be comprehensive and the Principal's Representative can delete clauses that are not applicable. This approach is considered the safest as generally the implications of omitting a clause in error are far worse than including a clause that is superfluous. Note retain Section or Clause numbering sequence by inserting "Not Used" in place of deleted text, whether a whole Section is deleted or Clauses within a Section.

Where possible, clauses within the SDB have been revised to refer to Main Roads online Guidelines/Standards in order to simplify and condense the Brief.

The Supply and Transport Branch have already updated the Tender Conditions that accompany the SDB and these can be found on the Main Roads website in the TDP area under AS4122.

Guidance Notes must be deleted from the final document after using for reference. Similarly text in blue italics within the Brief must be deleted from the final document.

Text highlighted in yellow must be completed by the author.

3. Specifying Standards in the Standard Design Brief

It is recommended that the author contacts the custodian of the appropriate sub-section when specifying standards for the project as standards used in previous work may no longer be appropriate.
