1. Policy
The provision of traffic signs and pavement markings in Western Australia, should be in accordance with Australian Standard Manual of Uniform Traffic Devices 1742 and Relevant Parts and Austroads Guidelines wherever practical.
Main Roads has developed a number of signs complementary to the Australian Standard to provide for signing requirements not included in the Standard. These signs are listed in the Main Roads Index of Signs.
Non-standard signs shall not be used without prior approval from the Manager Road and Traffic Engineering.
2. Purpose
The purpose of this document is to provide a single focal point for information about all signs and pavement markings used by Main Roads associated with traffic control devices and other facilities and guidelines for their use. This document provides reference to the relevant sections of the Australian Standards and Austroads Guidelines, along with Main Roads selections of options and variations to the Australian Standards and other Western Australian signing and pavement marking guidelines.3. Authority and Responsibility
Under Clause 297 ( 1 ) of the Road Traffic Code 2000, the Commissioner of Main Roads has sole power to "erect, establish or display, and may alter and or take down any road sign or traffic-control signal."Under Clause 297 ( 2 ) of the Road Traffic Code 2000, "the Commissioner of Main Roads may allow an authorised body to erect, establish, display, alter or take down any particular road sign or traffic-control signal, or road signs or traffic-control signals of a class or type of classes or types, and in the circumstances (if any), specified in the instrument of authorisation."
The current status is as follows:
Metropolitan Area
- The Commissioner of Main Roads has authorised all metropolitan councils, except for the Shire of Mundaring, to only carry out all traffic signing works (including maintenance) associated with parking controls along local roads. This includes pavement markings associated with parking controls.
- The Commissioner of Main Roads authorises contractors carrying out specific contract construction and maintenance works as required, to undertake traffic sign and pavement marking works.
- No general authorisation to carry out traffic sign and pavement marking works (except for parking) has been granted to the metropolitan local councils.
Rural Areas
The Commissioner of Main Roads has authorised all rural councils to carry out non-regulatory signing works (including maintenance) along local roads, and all traffic signing works (including maintenance) associated with parking controls along local roads. This authorisation does not include pavement markings except for those associated with parking controls.
