Modifying road user behavior in response to changes in the road environment

ITS provides the tools to transform mobility and improve safety – particularly in the context of road network operations. ITS empower Main Roads to efficiently manage traffic and respond to dynamic conditions for an optimised driving experience.

ITS plays a key role in modifying road user behaviour in response to real-time changes in the road environment, including:

  • Speed Limit Adjustments: Instantly adapting speed limits in response to traffic density, weather, or incidents to ensure smoother traffic flow and reduced congestion.
  • Traffic Signal Optimisation: Dynamic changes in traffic signal phases based on real-time traffic patterns minimise stops and enhance overall traffic efficiency.
  • Lane Use Management: Efficient lane allocation through Lane Use Management Systems optimises traffic distribution, balancing capacity and demand. The system also allows for the implementation of speed limit adjustments referenced above.
  • Coordinated Ramp Signals: Managing the level of traffic entering the freeway to improve mainline flow and safety.
