Protecting the land required through a Planning Control Area
The Minister for Planning has approved the Planning Control Area (PCA), which will protect the land required for the future rail and highway corridors. A notice has also been published in the Government Gazette.
The plans are now available on the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH) website under PCA 178 and 179, see here: https://www.wa.gov.au/government/document-collections/planning-control-areas
A formal notification has also been issued by DPLH to all directly impacted landowners.
Now that the PCA is in place, the Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC) will consider requests to purchase impacted land in accordance with the requirements of the Planning and Development Act 2005. The ability to do so will depend, in part, on the availability of budgeted funds.

Preferred rail realignment corridor option chosen
A planning study has been underway since 2019 to realign the existing freight rail line which currently traverses Mundijong and Mardella. It has included assessment of multiple corridor alignments, environmental and heritage studies and extensive stakeholder consultation with Public Transport Authority, Arc Infrastructure, Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH), affected landowners and the community. In conjunction with the rail corridor selection, a short section of the future Tonkin Highway extension south of Mundijong Road was incorporated in the planning study.
The extensive public engagement process culminated in two online surveys and multiple community information sessions which focused on identifying a preferred route by the community for the rail realignment. Feedback from community and stakeholders, along with a Multi Criteria Analysis and a detailed assessment based on land and community impacts, has resulted in Option 0 being chosen as the preferred freight rail realignment corridor.
