New to Industry
Find out what you need to know when you are starting out in the heavy vehicle industry in Western Australia.
When operating under a permit or order there will be relevant mass and dimension limits and approved networks which the Restricted Access Vehicle (RAV) can travel on.
To assist in understanding the relevant requirements for operation of your RAV, you will need to identify your RAV class and combination. To do so you can refer to the Common Restricted Access Vehicle (RAV) Configurations and the Restricted Access Vehicle (RAV) Classes which outline the common heavy vehicle combinations and classes in WA.
Many Restricted Access Vehicles (RAV) will require a permit to operate across the road network in Western Australia. Prior to submitting a permit application for your RAV there are some steps which need to be completed.
- To begin, your heavy vehicle needs to be licensed with the Department of Transport.
- Once the vehicle is licensed, complete the Restricted Access Vehicle Operator Registration Form to become a registered operator with Main Roads.
- You will also need to become accredited because WA Heavy Vehicle Accreditation (WAHVA) is mandatory for anyone who performs a transport task for hire or reward in Western Australia. This is also a requirement for interstate operators, unless exempted. Visit our WAHVA page to find out more about heavy vehicle accreditation, exemptions and to learn how to become accredited.
- Finally, to operate under an order or permit, you must register your heavy vehicle(s) with Main Roads. Mandatory information for each vehicle in your fleet must be provided by completing the Application to List or Update Vehicle or Trailer Information.
Once the above steps have been completed you can apply for the required permit.
