As the sun sets, five black cockatoos fly across the sky, symbolising the five elders who stood firm in the face of adversity. The landscape transforms, lush and green, representing a land of resistance and resilience. With the sunrise, the repatriation of Yagan's head is honoured, blending the green of the English countryside with the warm tones of Western Australia. The powerful silhouette of Yagan stands tall, a symbol of cultural reunification and strength.

On the banks of the Derbarl Yerrigan, a smoking ceremony takes place, the scent of burning leaves rising into the air. Two snakes, guardians of the land, smell the smoke and cause the water to rise, forming islands that symbolize the care and respect for the country. At Point Fraser, considered the male side of the river, sees a man throwing a boomerang, its spinning shape a symbol of life's continuity. On McCallum Park, the female side of the river, women use digging sticks, nurturing the earth. Spring growth flourishes on the islands, and kangaroos bound across the landscape, a sign of the land's abundance and vitality.

Matagarup, (Heirisson Island) the knee-deep crossing, holds great significance. As people walk through the water, their footsteps create ripples that echo the past and present. Black swans swim gracefully across the river, their presence a reminder of the natural beauty and harmony of this crossing place.

Beneath the bridge, the river whispers tales of the Waugal, the sacred rainbow serpent, whose movements shaped the land and waters. Silver bream and jellyfish dance through the currents, while river dolphins glide gracefully, embodying the spirit of the water. The river is alive, a testament to the enduring connection between the people and the land.

The water ripples, transforming into boomerangs that soar through the air. These boomerangs become sheoak seeds, which blossom and grow into majestic sheoak trees. The trees sway gently in the wind, shedding leaves into the water, where the cycle begins anew. This living culture is a testament to the enduring spirit and resilience of the people, their stories, and their land.

This lighting content was inspired by the original hand drawn works of the Kwel (sheoak) fruit by Lea Taylor, an accomplished Wadandi, Menang, Goreng Bibbulmun Noongar artist. The sheoak trees on Heirisson Island (Kwel on Matagarup) and beyond, have played an important role for the Whadjuk and other Noongar people throughout the south west of Western Australia.

Fire is represented sweeping across the land as controlled burnings are conducted ahead of the peak heat. Some embers can be seen, and the orange gradient represents the rising temperatures of the land, vibrant sunrises, and sunsets.

The strong red represents the heat of the second summer. Some orange and blue streaks flow like warm breezes across land. Various wattles and banksia flowers white, yellow, and orange are in full bloom.

Colours shift from warm to green to lush green as plant life regenerates. The lighter strokes represent the increased moisture in the cooling air.  Flowers pink to orange are red flowering gums, banksias and moojdar 'Christmas tree'.

The rain has arrived, cooling the land, and bringing an abundance of water. This is represented with blue and diagonal strokes and some bright bursts for clouds and lightning.  The red and orange lines add a contrasting element like campfires, kept alight for warmth and cooking.

The alternating warm and cool background colours represent the changing weather ranging from warm to very cold at night. Light blue strokes flow across like wind and rain. The streaks of yellow and orange are the beginning of new flowers and contrast with the background reinforcing the sense of a transitional season.

This season is represented by bursts of lush green tones with growing warmth(yellow) in the air. They can be seen as plants but also the scales of reptiles soaking in the sun. There is a general upward motion, signalling growth and new life. Some roaming colourful dashes can be thought of as various birds and insects attracted to nectar.
