Driving in WA

From Perth to Regional WA, this state presents unique challenges for all drivers. Learn how to stay safe on our roads and get where you need to go.

Driving the Gibb River Road

Western Australia hosts one of the world’s most expansive road networks. Covering nearly one-third of the continent, our state spans vast and diverse areas.

Due to the size and varying climates of our beautiful State, road and driving conditions may be more difficult than you expect. Be prepared for extreme weather, unsealed roads, stray wildlife and Perth’s greatest enemy – the merging lane.

Plan for any potential issues and familiarise yourself with the road conditions before you leave for any trip, so that you can experience WA in all its glory in the safest way possible.

Acknowledgement of country

The Government of Western Australia acknowledges the traditional custodians throughout Western Australia and their continuing connection to the land, waters and community. We pay our respects to all members of the Aboriginal communities and their cultures; and to Elders both past and present.
