Understanding Lane Use Management System (LUMS)

The speed limit signs displayed above each lane let you know the maximum speed you can travel through that section of freeway.
If a ‘White Arrow’ appears on the sign above your lane, you need to leave the lane as soon as safe to do so, prior to the red cross.
If the speed limit changes, the red circle around the numbers will begin flashing and will keep flashing until the speed limit returns to its normal setting.
If a ‘Red X’ appears on the sign above your lane that means the lane is now closed and you must move out of it as quickly as you safely can.
When a speed limit sign is changed, the red circle around the numbers will flash to draw driver attention to those changes and remains flashing until the speed sign returns to its normal speed. If the speed limit changes, you need to adjust your speed to match the displayed speed.
Electronic message boards on the left-hand side of some overhead electronic signs provide information about issues and road conditions ahead.
