Local Government Support Programs

Working with Western Australian Local Governments to drive change and save lives — together, we're working to reduce road trauma and make WA roads safer for everyone

Low Cost Urban Road Safety Program

As the name suggests, our Low Cost Urban Road Safety Program aims to install low-cost road treatments that can improve the safety of local roads and intersections.

These treatments may include, mini and compact roundabouts, uncontrolled pedestrian crossing facilities, raised safety platforms, gateway, mid-block treatments and other safety measure.

Once project locations have been identified, Main Roads will contact the Local Government Authority directly to advise the next steps. It's important to note that LGAs are not required to apply to be part of the program.

Local authorities are encouraged to review the program's framework and consider the conditions.

Road Safety Management Plans for Local Government

Austroads Local Government Road Safety Management Guidance sets out a road safety management planning framework and action plan that gives effect to higher-order documents, including the National and State Road Safety Strategies to assist local governments tackle the key road safety issues in their local area.

Road Safety Management Plans also help local governments to understand their road safety risks at a local level, identify key areas of focus, develop an action plan and monitor safety outcomes in relation to the State Road Safety Strategy targets. The plans can also support resource planning and can be used as a method of communicating to local government customers and other stakeholders about road safety at a local level.

We have developed a Road Safety Management Plan template and supporting tools and resources to assist local governments to develop and operate their own plan. We're also able to provide ongoing support and guidance to local governments about the road safety management planning process and the tools and resources that support the process.

Safe System for Local Government Workshops (formerly Vanguards)

The Safe System for Local Government Workshop series (formerly Vanguards Program) was established in 2023 with the objective of improving Local Government’s capability in providing safe local roads across Western Australia.

Main Roads WA has partnered with the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA), to deliver the workshops in conjunction with the Western Australian Centre for Road Safety Research, University of Western Australia and the University of Adelaide’s Centre for Automotive Safety Research.

The workshop invites local government officers, elected members and executive to gain up-to-date knowledge in road safety, apply best practice in Safe System and use tools to assist in influencing decision makers. In addition, the workshop integrates opportunities for establishing networks with content experts and local government staff and members across WA.

There are two options available:

  • Option 1: One-Day Workshop - A short, focused session for elected members and executive staff who want a clear overview of key road safety principles.
  • Option 2: Three-Day Workshop - Includes Option 1, and continues with two more days of detailed, hands-on learning about road safety and how to apply it in local government (essential for LGA officers).
