Investigation Tools and Road Safety Data

We utilise a variety of data sources and supporting tools to identify and analyse road safety problem areas

Investigation Tools

Crash Map

Crash Map is a relational GIS crash mapping application that enables users to perform both macro and micro analysis of reported road crashes. Crash Map also provides a fully integrated platform for the creation and management of applications for the State and Federal Black Spot programs in Western Australia. The crash data is available to State and Local Government road agencies and also to consultants engaged to complete work on behalf of these agencies.

Road View

Road View is a relational video application that allows users to upload and view georeferenced video files captured using a GPS enabled dashcam. Road View geospatially relates the video captured with crash data and asset information, enabling relational analysis of the road environment to assist in the process of conducting road safety route assessments and asset management. Road View is available to State and Local Government road agencies and to consultants engaged to complete work on behalf of these agencies.

Road Safety Data

AusRAP

The AusRAP road safety star rating system has been taken on by many Australian road authorities to  lift the safety standards of our roads and inform future investment.

At its core, AusRAP uses a star rating system to evaluate road safety performance. Ratings range from 1 to 5 stars, with 5 stars indicating the highest level of safety and 1 star the lowest. This approach allows road authorities to identify where the risk of fatal or serious injury is greatest and to intervene proactively, before crashes occur. Importantly, each additional star represents a halving of risk, making targeted upgrades a highly effective investment in public safety.

Across Australia, AusRAP is a trusted methodology for assessing and comparing road safety. Main Roads is committed to applying AusRAP star ratings across the state road network as part of a proactive strategy to reduce road trauma. In September 2025 a new national dashboard was launched which gives the public access to these road ratings and other information. These ratings will play a key role in guiding future improvements and prioritising treatments where they’ll have the greatest impact.

By focusing on the highest-risk roads first, we can deliver safer infrastructure, reduce serious injuries and fatalities, and ensure that our investment in road safety achieves meaningful, measurable outcomes.

Open Data Portal

Road safety data is critical for improving our understanding of issues on the WA road network. Main Roads provides reference datasets and map feature layers exploring different aspects of road safety, including:

  • Map feature layers detailing crash information for the last 5 years for road sections and points
  • Willingness to Pay Crash Costs for road safety business cases
  • The Intersection Crash Ranking Dashboard, for ranking intersections based on crash data

Intersection Crash Ranking

Our Intersection Crash Ranking - Interactive Report allows you to produce reports on statistics throughout WA.

Acknowledgement of Country

The Government of Western Australia acknowledges the traditional custodians throughout Western Australia and their continuing connection to the land, waters and community. We pay our respects to all members of the Aboriginal communities and their cultures; and to Elders both past and present.
