Investigation Tools and Road Safety Data
We utilise a variety of data sources and supporting tools to identify and analyse road safety problem areas
Investigation Tools
Crash Map
Crash Map is a relational GIS crash mapping application that enables users to perform both macro and micro analysis of reported road crashes. Crash Map also provides a fully integrated platform for the creation and management of applications for the State and Federal Black Spot programs in Western Australia. The crash data is available to State and Local Government road agencies and also to consultants engaged to complete work on behalf of these agencies.
Road View
Road View is a relational video application that allows users to upload and view georeferenced video files captured using a GPS enabled dashcam. Road View then geospatially relates the video captured with crash data and asset information, enabling relational analysis of the road environment to assist in the process of conducting road safety route assessments and asset management. Road View is available to State and Local Government road agencies and also to consultants engaged to complete work on behalf of these agencies.

AusRAP
AusRAP is the Australian Road Assessment Program and is based on the globally recognised International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP).
AusRAP’s star rating approach enables road authorities to manage road safety proactively, by addressing risk factors before they contribute to serious road crashes. AusRAP star ratings identify where the risk of fatal or serious injury is greatest and is measured on a scale from 1 to 5 stars. A 5-star rating representing the highest level of safety, while a 1-star rating indicates the lowest level of safety. Prioritising the highest risk roads for treatment will maximise the return on investment, with each additional star representing a halving of the risk.
AusRAP is an effective and trusted method used across Australia to rate the risks and safety performance of Australia’s roads. Main Roads is committed to AusRAP star rating its road network as part of a proactive approach to help prevent fatal and serious injuries. AusRAP star ratings will form an important basis to support improvements and treatment decisions; the results will help us find the best pathway forward to reduce road trauma on our state road network.
Open Data Portal
Road safety data is critical for improving our understanding of issues on the WA road network. Main Roads provides reference datasets and map feature layers exploring different aspects of road safety, including:
- Map feature layers detailing crash information for the last 5 years for road sections and points
- Willingness to Pay Crash Costs for road safety business cases
- The Intersection Crash Ranking Dashboard, for ranking intersections based on crash data
