Tonkin Gap - GEH underpass - Newstory

This underpass, which opened in February, presented several challenges for the construction team, requiring some innovative engineering, not used elsewhere on the project.

The pivot to the panel and post method to build the walls was required after our initial digging in the area uncovered some previous services and unexpected ground conditions.

Among the subterranean discoveries were sections of pavement from the previous lower Great Eastern Highway.

Now that the underpass has been opened, linking into Selby Park and the footbridge across the Tonkin Highway at Victoria Street, we will work on joining it to a path across the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) under the new bridge in March 2023.

We also plan to commence Aboriginal artwork for the underpass which has been designed by Karrak Designs and will be placed in the inner walls and finishes to the outer wing walls.
