Beams are a liftin’ at Paris-Clifton
The Bunbury Outer Ring Road project recently completed installation of the tee-roff beams at the Paris-Clifton Road interchange - aka the Gateway to the South West.

The interchange itself is being built to enable a seamless connection for vehicles and every aspect of it – from the artwork to the bridge design – constitutes an important part of a truly impressive regional entry statement.
The Paris-Clifton interchange
Pre-cast, concrete, tee-roff beams sit on either side of the centre bridge piers to provide structural integrity. There are 12 beams installed in total with six on each side of the piers, hence the interchange being labelled a ‘dual span’ bridge.
If lifting 12 beams doesn’t sound like a feat of impressive coordination, consider that it takes two cranes (one of 500 tonne capacity, and the other of 400 tonne capacity) and an experienced crew of crane operators and riggers to get these tee-roff beams into place.
The bridge works are performed within the construction site, making sure that traffic flow is not impacted, and public safety is prioritised at all times. Of course, looking after the fauna is also of high importance, with special fauna fencing already installed along the alignment between the Paris-Clifton and Raymond Road bridges.
After some challenging weather, the BORR team have successfully and safely completed the lifting.
“It’s a testament to all the workers and supervisors on the tee-roff beams that everything went off without a hitch and on time,” said Jack Dalton, a Senior Project Engineer on the project.
But there’s no resting on one’s T-shaped laurels here. There’s more work to be done to the superstructure of the bridge itself, before traffic can drive under and over!
