The Bunbury Outer Ring Road (BORR) project is gearing up for another major milestone with the next round of bridge beam installations.

The first set of 12 ‘tee-roff’ beams were installed at the Raymond Road interchange in February this year. ‘Tee-roff’ beams are pre-cast concrete shaped in the letter ‘T’.

The team is now onsite at the Paris Road and Clifton Road, and the South Western Highway (north) interchanges are preparing for the beams to be delivered, after which they will be installed at these locations in the coming months.

At the Paris Road and Clifton Road interchange, there will be 12 beams installed. As this is a ‘dual-span’ bridge, six beams will sit on either side of the centre piers, spanning the new BORR carriageways. A dual crane lifting method is required to move the beams into place, a process which involves two cranes each lifting one end of the beam each and requires an experienced crew of riggers and crane operators to be completed successfully.

The bridge at the South Western Highway (north) interchange has a single span of seven beams. These beams are some of the largest that will be made and used on the project at approximately 40 metres long, and weighing over 200 tonnes each.

The beams were produced and are currently being stored in our purpose-built pre-cast yard in Picton East, which will produce a total of 147 beams for the project. The facility was designed by the South West Gateway Alliance, Australian Precast Solutions, and other sub-consultants and was constructed in partnership with local Bunbury business, J & P Group.
