Aboriginal owned and managed electrical, mechanical and civil services company, Maali Group, have been sub contracted to install drainage and culverts on the project.

The scope of work includes installing 3.2 kilometres of transverse drainage in the form of Reinforced Concrete Pipes (RCP’s) and Reinforced Concrete Box Culverts (RCBC’s) throughout the northern project area. Maali Group’s work involves diverting the current waterways and irrigation channels and then preparing and installing the culverts. The team are also completing various temporary open drain diversions and foundation treatments such as rockfill, aggregates and geofabrics.

Jason Callard, Operations Manager for Maali Group, said “As an Aboriginal Business, the support we have received from South West Gateway Alliance has been exceptional. We have been able to show our civil capabilities on this project and provide job opportunities for Indigenous people in the Southwest Region.”

We are dedicated to generating long term job opportunities and upskilling for local businesses. At the end of June 2022, 36 per cent of the $450 million dedicated to South West businesses was committed, equalling $160.3 million. Over half of the planned $30 million spend on Aboriginal businesses was committed, totalling $15.3 million.
