Level Crossing Improvement Program

Renewal and upgrade work will be delivered in most regions throughout WA (see map) between 2024 and 2029 and include:

• 19 Flashing Lights to Boom Gates upgrades.
• 2 Stop Signs to Boom Gates upgrades.
• 15 Stop Signs to Flashing Lights upgrades.
• 7 Give Way Signs to Flashing Lights controls.
• 23 Flashing Lights or Boom Gates renewals.
• 4 Passive to Active pedestrian crossing upgrades.
• 11 pedestrian crossing renewals –compliance upgrades.
• 1 new pedestrian crossing.
• 378 Stop Sign control improvements, designed to increase the visibility and effectiveness of level crossing controls.

When complete:

• There will no longer be any public road ‘Give Way’ controlled level crossings located on main line railways within WA (any remaining ‘Give Way’ controls will be located on low volume rail sidings with all rail movements managed under traffic management); and
• More than 50 per cent of public road level crossings will be controlled by flashing lights or boom gates, one of the highest ratios of active to passive controlled crossings in the nation.

 Funding 

As part of the Commonwealth Government’s Regional Australia Level Crossing Safety Program and the State Government’s Level Crossing Capital Works Program, $39 million has been allocated to upgrade or renew level crossing controls across WA.
