What's happening
There are approximately 3,000 railway level crossings in Western Australia (WA) of which 1,327 are on public roads.
As at August 2025, there are 939 public road level crossings located on operational railway lines, with 456 fitted with active level crossing controls (Flashing Lights or Boom Gates) and 483 fitted with passive controls (Stop Signs or Give Way Signs).
The Level Crossing Improvement Program is designed to improve the level of control at level crossings across the public rail network to improve public safety and minimise risk of crashes.
