What's happening
A second stage of upgrades between El Caballo and Bakers Hill will commence in September 2026 and are due to be completed in December 2027.
Work includes:
- New east and westbound overtaking lanes between Chedaring Road and Hawke Avenue.
- Extension of the current eastbound overtaking lane between Coates Road and Oyston Road.
- Widening to a 12-metre seal and new road surface.
- Lowering of the crest of Great Eastern Highway at Coates Road to improve sight distance.
- Intersection improvements including turning pockets.
- Installation of one-metre-wide centreline treatments, with audible edge and centre lines.
- Improvements to drainage and property access.
These works follow four bridge replacements and four kilometres of widening undertaken in 2020 and 2022.
The upgrades will require vegetation removal and there is approval to clear 15.7 hectares of native vegetation in accordance with State and Federal environmental regulations. The clearing footprint has been reduced to the minimal area possible to undertake the upgrades.
An environmental offset for these upgrades includes a property of 29.1 hectares of farmland which has been sourced in close proximity to the road upgrades. This property will be conserved in perpetuity.
A revegetation management plan has also been developed to ensure ecological connectivity while preserving the look and feel of the roadside.
Reuse of the timber is being considered for example, Wandoo trees may be used for the Main Roads Cockatoo Artificial Nesting Box Program and suitable logs will offered to the Forest Products Commission.
