Why is the project needed?
The project is needed to support significant future growth in North Ellenbrook and help unlock new housing opportunities in Western Australia.
The North Ellenbrook East and West District Structure Plans are expected to deliver more than 12,500 new homes and support a future population of around 36,000 people over the next 20 years. The interchange will provide the transport infrastructure needed to support these future communities.
When will construction begin?
Construction is anticipated to commence in late 2026 following detailed design and planning activities.
What works are included in the project?
- Construction of a new Single Point Urban Interchange
- Realignment of the Principal Shared Path (PSP)
- Construction of a new underpass
- Associated road, drainage, lighting and safety infrastructure
What is a Single Point Urban Interchange?
A Single Point Urban Interchange is an interchange where traffic movements are managed through a central signalised intersection, allowing vehicles to move between the highway ramps and the local road network in a more controlled and efficient way, while also reducing the required footprint compared to other interchange forms. For this project, it will support safer and more efficient access across Tonkin Highway and into future development areas.
Why was this location selected for the interchange?
The location of the interchange, between Maralla Road and Warbrook Road, has been identified through planning and design investigations to support future development in North Ellenbrook and provide a strategic connection across Tonkin Highway. See a map here.
How will the project improve safety and reduce congestion?
The new interchange will improve safety and reduce congestion by providing safer, more efficient connections across Tonkin Highway for people, freight and local traffic.
By creating new road connections where none currently exist, the interchange will reduce travel times, improve traffic flow and support the safe movement of vehicles and freight through the area.
Will the interchange connect directly to future residential development?
Road connections to future surrounding developments will be coordinated as planning and development in the area progresses.
Will the project include cycling and pedestrian facilities?
The project includes Principal Shared Path (PSP) realignment and a new underpass to improve connectivity and provide safer access for cyclists and pedestrians.
Will traffic be affected during construction?
Temporary traffic impacts are expected during construction, including changed traffic conditions, reduced speed limits and possible night works.
