Mitchell Freeway Median Barriers Upgrade

Where the rail reserve runs along the middle of the freeway, low-deflection concrete barriers will be installed and the freeway shoulders widened into the central median.

This includes:

• Northbound sections between Ocean Reef Road and Hodges Drive, and Moore Drive and Hester Avenue; and
• The southbound section between Hester Avenue and Shenton Avenue.

Low-deflection concrete barriers provide the highest level of safety for this high-speed freeway environment.

Designed to contain vehicles in the event of a crash, they will minimise any impact on the adjacent rail network, improve transport reliability and enhance road user safety.

In the northbound section between Hodges Drive and Moore Drive, where the rail line deviates to Joondalup, new steel safety barriers will be installed.

 Funding

Funding for the new concrete barriers is provided on a 50:50 basis by the Australian and State Governments.

In addition, the State Government is also providing funding for the new steel safety barriers between Hodges Drive and Moore Drive, through the State Government’s Black Spot program.
