A single lane, three-legged roundabout is currently under construction on Great Northern Highway at the intersection with Rutland Road, within the City of Swan.
Between 2019 and 2023 there were 31 reported crashes at this intersection. The new roundabout will improve safety, reducing crashes by more than 85 per cent.
It will also improve efficiency for the 8,000 vehicles (including almost 900 heavy vehicles) that use this intersection each day.
Upgrades will include:
- Realignment of approximately 250 m of both Great Northern Highway approaches to the Rutland Road intersection to form a new single lane roundabout with a 26 m radius.
- Realignment of approximately 260 m of Rutland Road
- Reconstruction and resurfacing of Great Northern Highway and Rutland Road within the project area.
- Installation of street lighting to the Great Northern Highway and Rutland Road approaches to the intersection to current standards.
The project cost of $10.5 million is being fully funded by the Road Trauma Trust Account. The Road Trauma Trust Account receives 100 per cent of the revenue resulting from photographic speed and red-light camera fines.
The project will be completed in mid-2025.
