GITN Improvement Action Plan - Project Image

What's happening

Main Roads is currently undertaking investigations and project development activities to implement the Garden Island Transport Network Improvement Action Plan.

This includes conducting environmental, heritage and traffic investigations, engaging with key stakeholders and developing a Concept Design to guide the upgrades.

The investigations will define the scope and alignment of upgrades to the existing road network, including Point Peron Road, Memorial Drive and key intersections, and will inform future planning, prioritisation and investment decisions.

This project development work will be undertaken over the next six to nine months. In the coming months, Main Roads will engage with the local community, impacted businesses and stakeholders in the area to help develop the optimal project solution.

Background

As part of the AUKUS program, Submarine Rotational Force – West (SRF-West) will be established at HMAS Stirling which will see the rotational presence of US and UK submarines, from 2027, supported by up to $8 billion in investment for major infrastructure and capability upgrades to support SRF-West. This will drive a significant increase in traffic demand on roads providing access to HMAS Stirling.

This growth in traffic demand, combined with existing congestion issues on the network, requires a coordinated program of transport infrastructure improvements to be delivered in the short to medium term.
