Ennis Avenue and Patterson Road Intersection Upgrade

This busy intersection sits within a flat landscape and currently has limited drainage. It has a history of safety issues associated with localised flooding and aquaplaning during the winter months.

There were 49 crashes recorded at this location in the five-year period to December 2025. Almost 90 per cent of these were rear-end crashes, which is almost double the metropolitan average.  The intersection was also the scene of a fatal crash in 2022.

To address these issues, we will be:

• raising and resurfacing the intersection and connecting roads to address existing aquaplaning issues;
• extending all turning pockets to provide additional vehicle storage;
• completing significant underground drainage works and adding new stormwater basins in the Ennis Avenue and Patterson Road medians;
• upgrading pedestrian crossing facilities with pram ramps and median refuges;
• building a new shared path connecting Ennis Avenue to the crossing facilities at the intersection, and upgrading concrete paths and cyclist exit points;
• upgrading traffic signals; and
• installing new safety barriers on Patterson Road, as well as new streetlighting, signs and line-marking.

To facilitate construction of new drainwater basins on the eastern leg of Ennis Avenue, several grass trees will be carefully relocated within the median to give them the best chance of survival. Some non-native vegetation is also approved for clearing.
