Albany Highway, Olga Road and Kelvin Road Intersection Upgrade

Albany Highway will be widened to double the number of traffic lanes on each approach to the intersection, significantly improving capacity and traffic flow. This will provide two lanes for motorists travelling straight through on Albany Highway, as well as new left and right-turn pockets for traffic turning into Olga Road and Kelvin Road.

A new solid median will be installed on Albany Highway, within the vicinity of the intersection, to improve safety by eliminating right-turn movements across multiple lanes of traffic.

A left-turn pocket will also be included to provide safe access to Maddington Toyota, on the north-east corner.

To improve safety and connectivity for pedestrians, the median islands will be widened to provide refuge while crossing and a new footpath will be constructed along Albany Highway.

Line-marking, lighting and drainage will also be upgraded as part of the project.

More than 36,000 vehicles per day travel through this intersection on Albany Highway alone, including 9% heavy vehicles. In the morning and afternoon peak periods, there is often congestion at the intersection, amplified by the proximity to the Kelvin Road level crossing.

In the five-year period to December 2024, there were 54 crashes recorded at this intersection, nine of which resulted in someone requiring hospitalisation or medical attention. More than 66% were rear-end crashes, with nine right-angle or right-turn through crashes. One crash resulted in a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle.
