SPV Licensing and In Principle Approvals

Information regarding Special Purpose Vehicle licensing requirements and applying for In-Principal approval.

SPV Licensing

If your SPV is a motor vehicle that is not mounted on a truck chassis (e.g. All-terrain cranes) and it falls within the mass limits specified within the Mass Tables for SPV Motor Vehicles (Excluding Truck Mounted SPVs) or the Mass Tables for Three (3) Axle Grader please contact the Department of Transport for licensing requirements.

If your SPV falls outside of the mass limits specified in the above Mass Tables or is a truck mounted SPV, it must undergo a ‘Recommendation for Licensing Assessment’, prior to being licensed. When the assessment requirements are met, Main Roads will forward the information directly to the Department of Transport to license your SPV.

SPV In Principle Approval

If you intend to build or import an SPV in WA that exceeds dimension and/or mass requirements prescribed in regulations, you should apply for an in-principle approval from Main Roads. This step will determine if your proposed SPV will be able to obtain the necessary permit once it has been built or imported.

Application Form

Please note the assessment process for an in-principle approval may take up to four weeks to complete.
