Heavy Lift Tow Trucks

Information regarding Heavy Lift Tow Truck permit types including associated costs, operating conditions and application forms.

A Heavy Lift Tow Truck (HLTT) must comply with statutory mass and dimension requirements, unless operating under a Main Roads permit.

Period Permit

This period permit has been developed to provide an approved HLTT additional mass limits on tandem and tri drive axle groups and approval to exceed certain statutory dimension limits, such as the statutory length limit for a vehicle combination, when towing a heavy vehicle or a heavy vehicle combination.

The Tow Truck Licensing and Permit Requirements Guidelines outlines further information about the requirements associated with a HLTT towing a disabled heavy vehicle or vehicle combination.

The Compliant Heavy Lift Tow Truck Operators listing identifies HLTT Operators which are compliant in terms of having appropriate Heavy Lift Tow Truck Period Permit issued to tow a heavy vehicle.

 HLTT operators not included in the above document must apply for a Heavy Lift Tow Truck Single Movement Permit.

Transport operators are reminded of their legal obligations under the Chain of Responsibility Legislation. Anyone who has control within the transport chain can be held legally accountable if by action, inaction or demand, they cause or contribute to mass, dimension or loading breaches.

Cost: $25 Permit Fee plus Mass Component Fee of up to $336 for 12 months, or $50 Permit Fee plus Mass Component Fee of up to $1008 for 36 months

Single Movement Permit

If an operator does not wish to obtain the Heavy Lift Tow Truck Period Permit, they may apply for a Heavy Lift Tow Truck Single Movement Permit for each movement. Heavy Lift Tow Truck Single Movement Permits will be issued by Main Roads in accordance with the Procedure for Heavy Lift Tow Truck Single Movement Approvals.
