Agricultural Vehicle Pilots
A pilot vehicle is required to accompany an oversize agricultural combination or agricultural machine when it exceeds certain dimensions.
The Agricultural Pilot Authorisation 2019 allows a person, known as an Agricultural Pilot, to drive a pilot vehicle when accompanying an oversize agricultural combination or agricultural machine, up to 8.5 m in width, without the need to hold a Heavy Vehicle Pilot Licence.
Agricultural Pilot Requirements
An Agricultural Pilot must comply with all the requirements outlined in the Agricultural Pilot Operational Requirements.
The pilot requirements vary for each Agricultural Pilot Zone because they have been assessed considering the different traffic volumes and the mix of traffic using the roads within each zone. The Agricultural Pilot Requirements Flow Chart defines the pilot requirements for an oversize agricultural combination or agricultural machine when travelling within each Agricultural Pilot Zone.
The Agricultural Pilot Zones are available on our RAV Mapping Tool, and are defined as follows:
- Green Zone - All local roads within the areas bounded by Regional Distributor and State roads.
- Orange Zone - All Regional Distributor and State roads, outside the Perth Metropolitan Area.
- Red Zone - All roads within the Perth Metropolitan Area.
The Agricultural Pilot Zones Map provides a high-level view of the zones across WA and the Orange Zone - Regional Distributor and State Roads List provides a road list format for the orange zone only.
