Electric Vehicles
Main Roads is continuing to introduce electric vehicles (EVs), in both fleet and plant equipment as part of the transition to low and zero emission vehicles.
The WA State EV Strategy was released in November 2020 to assist in driving the uptake of EVs in Western Australia. The EV strategy seeks to prepare for the transition to low and zero emission vehicles.
Our Net Zero Transition plan recognises that our plant and fleet will remain a major contributor to our emissions profile until 2030. Significant barriers exist for reducing emissions from fleet and plant equipment for our operations, such as the lack of suitable electric vehicle (EV) models, the long turn over time and cost of charging infrastructure which may require significant building upgrades. A two-prong approach will be taken to address emissions reduction from our plant and fleet:
- Establish a policy to introducing electric trucks and plant items into our fleet
- Leverage national EV strategies and Whole of Government collaboration for EV procurement.
In addition, we will adopt the whole of government target for at least 50% of new fleet purchases (in eligible categories like passenger vehicles and SUVs) be electric from 1 July 2025.
It is expected that the civil construction industry will also experience barriers when making the decision to invest in electrifying their fleets. To provide clarity for the industry Main Roads has introduced an EV Quota for major projects valued at more than $100m on the following minimums:
Initial EV quota for either:
- >1% new fully electric or hydrogen fuel cell heavy vehicles/heavy plant, or
- >2% new fully electric or hydrogen fuel cell light trucks/light plant, or
- >4% of new fully electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles for light vehicle/passenger vehicles, or
- >8% new plug-in hybrid vehicles
