Great Northern Highway (GNH) H006 Fitzroy to Gogo Upgrade
Phase:Clearing proposal closed for submission
The Fitzroy Crossing to Gogo section of the Great Northern Highway (GNH) in Kimberley crosses an extensive floodplain associated with the Margaret River and Fitzroy River and is subject to flooding on an annual basis. The regular inundation has caused this section of highway to fall significantly below the service level for a national highway. As a result, this section of the highway is regularly closed for several days or weeks following wet season rainfall events.
Main Roads therefore proposes to upgrade and realign approximately 10 km of GNH (H006) between SLK 2525.0 – 2535.7 to meet current serviceability levels for a national highway. The proposal will require the clearing of up to 198 ha of native vegetation within a 1,019 ha Project Development Envelope (PDE) for road realignment and associated works. Main Roads proposes to use Statewide Clearing Permit CPS 818/17 to undertake the vegetation clearing, with construction planned to commence in 2026 with a 2-3-year build duration.
