HVS Update 27-2024

Amendment to the Over Size Over Mass (OSOM) Multi-loading Policy

Main Roads Heavy Vehicle Services (HVS) advises the heavy haulage industry that we have made an amendment to our multi-loading policy, as outlined in the Guidelines for Transporting Multiple Items on an Oversize or Over-mass Vehicle.

The amendment allows a low loader or platform trailer, with at least 8 tyres per axle and loaded with a mining machine such as a dump truck, to carry additional items, provided:

(a) The additional items have been removed from the mining machine, such as the tray or wheels from the dump truck chassis; and

(b) The overall vehicle combination length does not exceed 50 metres.

This means if you are able to move a machine such as a dump truck fully assembled, you will not be disadvantaged if you need to disassemble the machine to reduce the dimensions. The components can still be carried on the same low loader or platform trailer, as per the below example:

HVS will monitor this policy change to ensure there are no unforeseen consequences and to ensure industry complies with the provision as intended.
