Yalinda Drive beam installation is yalin-done!

The Yalinda Drive overpass sits in the southern section of the Bunbury Outer Ring Road (BORR) alignment and with all four tee-roff beams now installed, another bridge on the project is taking shape.

The Yalinda Drive bridge will be a visually unique section of BORR thanks to the Djeran season-themed artwork design by Karrak Designs.

Up until recently, however, the bridge has been all design and no beams. With installation of the bridge beams now completed, Yalinda Drive bridge is looking more beautiful by the day.

Joyce Krane Australia, a WA-based lifting and logistics specialist, completed the installation of all four tee-roff beams over three consecutive days.

The team used an LTM-1750 mobile crane to complete the lift. This 750-tonne crane features a hydraulic boom to enable its super lifting capacity whilst keeping the beams highly stable. Considering that each of the precast beams weighed over 180 tonnes each, using a crane of this type was necessary.

All beams were 36 metres in length and 2.2 metres in height. To place each of the four beams safely and securely, the mobile crane had to be moved for each installation, the process of which along with the installation itself took three days to complete.

Each bridge beam installation on BORR presents its own unique set of challenges. Whilst there was no rail line or river to cross at Yalinda Drive, the task presented its own obstacle in the form of high voltage powerlines running overhead and along the side of the bridge.

To avoid dangerous and damaging contact with the powerlines, all four beams had to be installed extremely carefully and meticulously.
