What's happening
A $23 million contract was awarded to Central Earthmoving to construct the first five overtaking lanes (Package One).
Work on the first package is progressing well with clearing and grubbing work for lanes one, three and four complete, along with the commencement of rock excavation and embankment construction. Foundation, clearing and grubbing work has also been completed for overtaking lane six.
Work is also underway for the extension of existing culverts and installation of new pipe culverts and removal of the existing seal and asphalt shoulder profiling.
The installation of temporary line marking for Package One will result in changed traffic conditions - speed reductions will remain in place throughout the duration of the project.
Staged construction of the overtaking lanes is expected to minimise inconvenience to road users however, road users are advised to plan their journey as delays may be experienced.
A second contract for a further six overtaking lanes (Package Two) is expected to be awarded in July 2024 with work expected to commence in August 2024.
