Unsealed portion of Gibb River Road

What's happening

We're progressively upgrading Gibb River Road to improve the general condition and serviceability of the road, especially during wet season.

Work through to late 2024 includes gravel sheeting and sealing of a 4km section west of March Fly Glen as well as upgrades to the Bell Creek and Barnett River Floodways. We’re also widening and sealing between Derby Road and Bungarun Road.

Commencing 2025, we will work to upgrade the Pentecost River and Durack River Floodways and install culverts at the Barnett River Floodway. We’ll also seal 8km of road between Pentecost River and Home Valley Station, and gravel sheet and seal various sections.

  • Form and gravel sheet 30 km near Dimboola Creek
  • Form and gravel sheet 42 km between Gibb River Station and Kalumburu Road

The road will generally be maintained as a high standard unsealed road. Only the sections of the road that are difficult to maintain will be sealed, including the eastern and western ends with the highest traffic volumes.

Upgrades include:

  • Improvements to floodways and drainage;
  • Improvements to the road formation, drainage and gravel sheeting;
  • Road sealing where required.

Ongoing maintenance includes re-sheeting sections of road with gravel where the old, unsealed pavement is being worn away by traffic.

This work will provide a safer driving environment for all road users, in both wet and dry conditions, while reducing road maintenance needs.
