The project has seen unprecedented participation rates of Aboriginal employment, and engagement of local Aboriginal businesses from Broome, Dampier Peninsula and Derby.

Sealing of Broome-Cape Leveque Road was completed in 2020; however, a significant section of the road was damaged, including rehabilitated areas and the drainage network, following record rainfall in February 2022.

Environmental restoration work continues to progress with rehabilitation of borrow pits and the old road alignment.

Traditional Owners and Ranger Groups continue to work closely with Main Roads to help minimise the environmental footprint, risk to cultural heritage and ensure the protection of threatened fauna such as the Greater Bilby. Preclearing surveys and collaboration with Scientists, Conservation Groups and other Government Departments are ensuring a mutually beneficial outcome for all.

Intersection upgrade at Broome Road and Beagle Bay was part of the $20 million Broome-Cape Leveque Road Upgrading and Community Access Roads project funded by the Commonwealth ($16 million) and State ($4 million) governments for road improvements on the Dampier Peninsula.
