Sustainable development goals

At Main Roads, we use these SDGs as a framework to benchmark our internal approach and progress for sustainable development as an organisation.

In September 2015, the Australian Government became a signatory to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs inspire a progressive and innovative agenda to respond to global challenges. The SDGs are numbered 1-17, and each goal is linked to social, economic, political or environmental sustainability aspects. Within these 17 SDGs, there are 169 targets and indicators with aims to achieve a number of these global targets by 2030. Further information on the SDGs can be found on the United Nations Website.

At Main Roads, we use these SDGs as a framework to benchmark our internal approach and progress for sustainable development as an organisation. The SDGs where we as an organisation can have the biggest impact have been identified as Goal 3 Good Health and Well-Being, Goal 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Goal 12 Responsible Consumption and Production.

We have produced a fact sheet to outline how we are responding to the SDGs as a framework, and how our activities meet the targets set under each goal. This fact sheet outlines how our business and operational activities are guided by the SDGs, and what we plan to do as an organisation to work towards achieving each goal.
