Stephenson Avenue Extension - Works Resume

Works on the Stephenson Avenue Extension Stage 2 Project will partially resume tomorrow morning.

The first section of the site to restart works will be the casting yard for the Stephenson Avenue bridge to the west of Mitchell Freeway. This will allow for the incremental bridge launch works over the freeway to continue.

Main Roads stopped all works on the construction site two weeks ago following the discovery of asbestos contaminated material in two spoil stockpiles.

Since then, exclusion zones have been established around the stockpiles and dust suppressant polymer has been sprayed over the stockpiles.

Additional contamination and industrial hygiene experts have been engaged in the ongoing management of the project site.

An extensive network of airborne asbestos monitors has been installed around the site to ensure the safety of the community and workers.

There is no evidence of airborne asbestos to date.

The remaining work zones will be progressively reopened once contamination and industrial hygiene experts confirm that the operation of each area is safe to resume.

The measures are part of a work recommencement plan that incorporates ongoing environmental management to mitigate the risk of airborne asbestos.

Main Roads will continue to work closely with Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and contamination experts in the ongoing management of the project site.
