Minilya Exmouth Road Upgrade

Mid West Gascoyne

Undertaking road improvements to high priority sections to improve safety in the region.
Minilya Exmouth Road Upgrade

We are widening sections of Minilya Exmouth Road, which provides access to the iconic Ningaloo Reef. The road was constructed in 1964 and is in need of widening and resurfacing to meet the increase in demand and usage due to the town's popularity with tourists.

 • Section One includes widening work to the first 4km of road
 • Section Two includes 18km of widening work near the Burkett Road intersection

In 2020, State and Commonwealth Governments committed $14 million towards this upgrade.

What's happening
Construction is currently in progress.

Project development for the upgrading of further sections of the roads is underway. This will inform more improvements if further funding becomes available.
 • Improve amenity for visitors to the region
 • The upgrade will help prepare the region for a rare total eclipse event on April 20, 2023, which will only be visible in Australia from the Exmouth Peninsula. An estimated 10,000 to 50,000 eclipse chasers and visitors are anticipated to travel to Exmouth for the eclipse
