Hay Street Bridge

The bridge height over Mitchell Freeway has been increased to minimise the risk of being hit by oversized vehicles.
Hay Street Bridge construction

Hay Street Bridge was built over Mitchell Freeway southbound in 1968 and did not meet today’s bridge height clearance standards. Trucks have hit the bridge nine times in the past five years.

This project addressed this issue by:

  • Increasing the bridge height by 250mm
  • Replacing a 21m long section with a new raised section
  • Adding a bridge protection beam
The upgrades are expected to reduce the likelihood of unauthorised over-height vehicle strikes and improve safety.
