Mitchell Freeway Southbound Upgrade

Hodges Drive to Hepburn Avenue

Adding a third lane from Hodges Drive to Hepburn Avenue to help you get to the CBD faster and safer. Works will begin in early 2021.
Cars driving on Mitchell Freeway Southbound

This is the only southbound section of freeway with less than three lanes, resulting in heavy congestion during peak periods. The new traffic lane will increase the Mitchell Freeway’s southbound capacity by 50 per cent. This will lead to shorter, more reliable journey times and provide relief for up to 51,000 motorists per day.

We will install new concrete barriers adjacent to the rail reserve between Hodges Drive and Hepburn Avenue as part of this project.

Subject to statutory approvals, works may also include:

  • Amenity or noise walls where required
  • Modifications to freeway on ramps to enable future ramp signalling at Hodges Drive, Ocean Reef Road, Whitfords Avenue and Hepburn Avenue.
  • Verge side emergency stopping bays
  • Principal Shared Path (PSP) construction, upgrades and local connections
