What's happening

We’ve completed widening, resurfacing and the installation of audible edge lines to a 4 kilometre section of the road north of North West Coastal Highway.

Project development work for upgrades to further sections is underway, to help inform future improvements if further funding becomes available.

Scope

Sections of Minilya Exmouth Road are being widened, and resurfaced to help provide better access to the iconic Ningaloo Reef. The road was constructed in 1964 and upgrades are required to meet the increase in tourist demand and usage.

  • Section One included widening to the first 4 km of road
  • Section Two included 18 km of widening near the Burkett Road intersection
These upgrades will help prepare the region for a rare total eclipse event on 20 April 2023, which will only be visible in Australia from the Exmouth Peninsula. An estimated 10,000 to 50,000 eclipse chasers and visitors are anticipated to travel to Exmouth for the eclipse
