Lumsden Point Intersection and Acceleration Lane Upgrade

Phase:Assessment Report finalised to address submissions

Number of submissions 0

Main Roads Western Australia (Main Roads) is planning to upgrade the Great Northern Highway and Lumsden Point / Pinga Street intersection to improve the transportation of heavy loads and ensure a smooth flow of traffic. This will involve clearing up to 12.03 hectares of native vegetation and developing two additional acceleration lanes between 1605 – 1609 SLK in the Shire of Port Hedland.

The proposed upgrade will address the current challenges posed by the unsuitable access road to Lumsden Point and the inadequacy of the Great Northern Highway (GNH) and Pinga Street intersection to handle the increased traffic flow and turning radius for 130m long vehicles. To resolve these issues, a grade-separated interchange solution has been designed to replace the current intersection of GNH and Pinga Street. An acceleration lane has also been added to accommodate the increased traffic volume of trucks using the intersection and to assist with turning onto Pinga Street and Lumsden Point.

Overall, the proposed upgrade will enhance the safety and efficiency of the Great Northern Highway and Lumsden Point / Pinga Street intersection, providing a better transportation experience for all road users.
