Total Solar Eclipse

Total Solar Eclipse makes its way on a north-easterly path across the Cape Range.

Published: 05 April 2023, Updated: 05 April 2023

On Thursday 20 April, Exmouth will plunge into total darkness for approximately 60 seconds, as the Total Solar Eclipse makes its way on a north-easterly path across the Cape Range.

This rare astronomical event is expected to bring up to 40,000 extra travellers to Western Australia, all trekking towards the Exmouth peninsula, which is one of the few places in the world, and only place in mainland Australia, from which the event can be witnessed.

If you’re planning to head north (or south!) for the event, please visit the Department of Jobs, Science, Tourism and Industry’s (JTSI) dedicated webpage which provides information including how to get there, where to stay and how to safely view the Eclipse.

You can also download a copy of our Driving in WA Guide for information on how to travel safely on our regional roads.

Traffic Management

Traffic management will be implemented between Geraldton, Exmouth and Karratha with measures in place to improve safety and help reduce congestion, where possible.

This includes variable message signs, reduced speeds, portable traffic signals and signs advising which sites can be accessed for temporary parking. You can expect to see traffic management measures and/or our crew at the following locations:

  • Galena Bridge - camp site entry and exit to North-West Coastal Highway
  • Nerren Nerren rest area
  • Billabong and Overlander Roadhouses (including Shark Bay Road intersection)
  • Edaggee rest area
  • North-West Coastal Highway and Robinson Street, Carnarvon
  • Yalabia rest area
  • Minilya rest area and Roadhouse
  • Lyndon River Crossing rest area
  • Coral Bay Road
  • Ningaloo Station Access
  • Minilya Exmouth Road
  • Exmouth Town Centre
  • Cape Range National Park

Checkpoints

  • Check points will be established at the intersection of Minilya Exmouth Road and Coral Bay Road; Minilya Exmouth Road and Ningaloo Station Access; and Minilya Exmouth Road and Burkett Road.
  • The checkpoints will be managed by traffic controllers. You will be asked about your food and fuel situation and, if you have not arranged accommodation, you could be turned-around.
