The temporary two-lane low-level vehicle causeway is subject to a closure due to an expected heavy rainfall around Wednesday, June 28.

Unseasonal heavy rainfall expected at Fitzroy Crossing in the coming days may force the closure of the town's temporary two-lane low-level vehicle causeway around Wednesday, June 28.

Up to 150mm is expected to fall in the Fitzroy River catchment over the next week. The Fitzroy River is expected to rise and possibly breach the two-lane causeway by Wednesday, forcing its closure.

In the event of the closure Great Northern Highway traffic will be diverted to the single-lane low-level causeway in Fitzroy Crossing during daylight hours only. Vehicles greater than 19 metres in length won't be permitted across the single-lane causeway.

As the level of the Fitzroy River rises the single-lane low-level causeway may be closed later in the week with no alternative route available.

The unseasonal rain event is also likely to cause the closure of the Gibb River Road on Tuesday, June 27. Road users are urged to leave the Gibb River Road by tomorrow, Monday June 26 to avoid isolation.
