Chester Pass Road roadworks

‚ÄčChester Pass Road is an important freight link connecting the Great Southern Region with the City of Albany and plays an integral role in local traffic movement within the City. Chester Pass Road contains sections of old pavement that has seen numerous minor repairs in recent years and now requires more substantial treatment.

On 15 February 2018, we commenced drainage improvements and pavement rehabilitation works on both sides of Chester Pass Road from the Chester Pass Road roundabout (where the road intersects with Albany Highway) to just north of Hudson Road.

Latest News

Weather permitting, Stage 3 construction works will commence on 19 April.  Road users should be aware that this stage of works will alter conditions at the Chester Pass Road roundabout and traffic managment will be in place.

Delays may be experienced, particularly during peak and busy periods.  Road users are advised to consider alternative routes if possible during this final stage of the works.

Works will continue through stages 1 & 2 to complete kerbing and clean-up activities.

Scope of Works

Works are being undertaken to rehabilitate failed pavement and improve drainage on all four lanes of Chester Pass Road as a three-staged construction process, with each stage covering approximately 400 metres.

Timelines for the completion of each stage is outlined below, weather permitting:

Stage 1: 21 February to 16 March 2018

Stage 2: 17 March to 18 April 2018

Stage 3: 23 April to 10 May 2018

Asphalt surfacing and permanent line marking will be undertaken in mid-May 2018 once all three stages of construction work has been completed.

Traffic impact - Plan ahead to avoid delays

During Stage 3 works, please be aware of temporary modifications to the Chester Pass Road roundabout:

  • traffic management will be in place.  Road users are advised to consider using an alternative route, where possible to avoid delays:
  • traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on Chester Pass Road, with traffic management and speed restrictions in place;
  • temporary detours will be implemented periodically to divert traffic from side streets; and
  • access to residential and commercial driveways will be closed as work occurs adjacent to each property. We will endeavour to reopen access as quickly as possible.

In order to prevent excessive queue lengths and safety hazards, traffic bollards have been positioned along the centre of the road to discourage vehicles from turning into contraflow traffic to access properties on the opposite side of the road.  Drivers are asked to travel through the roadworks and turn around at a convenient location in order to approach and enter properties from the other direction, removing the need to cross traffic and impede traffic flow.

Key Benefits

  • Improved drainage
  • Smoother road surfaces
  • Improved driveway access for local businesses and residents

Key Dates

Works commenced on 21 February 2018 and are expected to be completed by late May 2018.
