Special Purpose Vehicles

A "Special Purpose Vehicle" means a motor vehicle, other than a tow truck or an agricultural vehicle, built for a purpose other than carrying a load, except for water in the case of concrete pumps and fire trucks, as defined in the Road Traffic (Vehicles) Regulations 2014.

Upcoming Changes to SPV Licensing Process 

As part of the continued effort to reduce "red tape" for the transport industry, Main Roads and the Department of Transport (DoT) have undertaken a review of the SPV licensing and permit application process.

As a result, effective as of 1 February 2016 check weighs will no longer be required when applying for an SPV licence or permit unless requested by Main Roads or the Department of Transport.

Operators will be required to determine the weight of their own vehicle, using any accurate methods available.

Permit Application Process

 
Motor Vehicle SPV Permit Process
  • Ensure that your SPV is licensed or you have obtained a DOT exceeding 48Hr permit (copy to be submitted with permit application).
  • Ensure that a Restricted Access Vehicle Operator and/or WA Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Registration Form  has been completed and submitted to Main Roads Heavy Vehicle Services.
  • Ensure that a Application to list or Update Motor Vehicle Special Purpose Vehicles  has been completed for the vehicle in question and submitted to Main Roads Heavy Vehicle Services
  • For Period Permits or a Single Trip Permit complete the  Application for Special Purpose Vehicle  and return to Main Roads Heavy Vehicle Services for assessment.
    •  Vehicles that meet the requirements within the SPV State Wide parameters table may be eligible for a State Wide access period permit which may include bridge and Shire restrictions. State Wide access period permits can be issued for 1 year at a cost of $25 or for 3 years at a cost of $50. Please indicate on the application form if you are applying for State Wide access and the duration the permit is required.
    • Vehicles which do not meet the parameters as specified in the table, must nominate the regions / shires required for operation. These permits are issued for 1 year only, at a cost of $25, and may be subject to bridge and Shire restrictions. This process can take up to 4 weeks to complete.

Combination SPV Permit Process
    • For period permits please nominate the regions / shires required for operation. These permits are issued for 1 year only at a cost of $25. This process can take up to 4 weeks to complete.
    • Single trip permits costs $25, are route specific and must only be used for a single journey within a 1 month period.

 

Road Crossing Permit Process

 
Permits for a straight line road crossing may be requested by submitting a SPV Straight Line Road Crossing Permit Application together with the information requested on the Road Crossing Permit requirements document. Approval is subject to the road crossing being assessed as safe and suitable.

 

SPV permit payments can be made via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)
