1. Part A: Policy Statement

Main Roads will adopt cost effective and integrated Intelligent Transport Systems that maximise access, safety, efficiency and predictability of the road network, whilst facilitating use that has minimal environmental impact, as part of a "whole of transport" approach to the development of the road network.

In particular Main Roads will apply ITS solutions to the following areas of the operation of the road network:

    • Timely and accurate information to road users and managers;
    • Effective control of road use; and,
    • Improved road safety, access and compliance.

Main Roads will continue to develop and maintain a capability and awareness of ITS developments whilst at the same time minimising the risk to Government of implementing ITS solutions.

Main Roads will ensure that the scope of all new road projects incorporates appropriate ITS applications, and that these facilities are delivered as an integral component of the road project.

For the existing road network Main Roads will develop implementation plans, programs and projects, as required, to deliver ITS applications in a planned and coordinated manner in line with the above Policy Statement and Main Roads’ Managed Freeways Provision Guidelines, and within available resource constraints.
