Early works update - July 2017

Project announcement - May 2017

On 10 May 2017, the Minister for Transport, Hon Rita Saffioti MLA announced that the contract for design and construction of the Wanneroo Road Duplication would be awarded to the Metropolitan Road Improvement Alliance following the renegotiation of the contract for the Roe 8 project.

The project will complement other significant works on Wanneroo Road, including new interchanges at the intersections of Joondalup Drive and Ocean Reef Road, announced as part of a $2.3billion package of road and rail infrastructure works.

Overview

Upgrading Wanneroo Road to a dual carriageway from Joondalup Drive to Flynn Drive will enhance road safety and efficiency and reduce travel times. The project will also cater for long-term traffic demands generated by rapid population growth in Perth’s north-west metropolitan corridor.

The project will convert the existing single-lane road to a dual carriageway over 3.2 km in each direction that provides a north-south alternative to Mitchell Freeway and is critical for efficient industry connectivity to the Wangarra and Neerabup industrial parks.

Project scope

Works will include:

  • Intersection upgrades at Golf Links Drive and Carramar Drive
  • Construction of 3.2km of dual carriageway within the road reserve
  • Noisewalls along the eastern side of Wanneroo Road between Joondalup Drive to north of Carramar Drive, Carramar
  • Drainage, retaining walls and landscaping

Project benefits

  • Remove existing pinch point of Wanneroo Road to alleviate current congestion
  • Accommodate increasing volumes of traffic generated by population growth and industrial development in the North West corridor of the Perth Metropolitan area
  • Support ongoing development of Wanneroo Road as a major north-south alternative to Mitchell Freeway

Status and timing

The project is currently at the detailed design stage. It is anticipated that construction will begin in mid-late 2017.
