Charles Street Bus Bridge and Busway

Overview

Aimed at improving the reliability of bus services throughout Northbridge, we will deliver a new bus bridge and bus priority measures on behalf of the Public Transport Authority.

 

Latest news

The project is nearing completion with the Busway commencing operations at the end of June 2017 and the associated Bus Layover commencing operations from 25 September 2017. Minor construction works remain underway at locations in Northbridge, West Perth and North Perth.

 

Traffic impact

There are no major project works remaining. Final line marking of side streets adjoining Charles Street, scheduled for the beginning of October, may have some minor impact on local traffic.

 

Scope of works

This project involves the construction of a new bus bridge and associated bus priority measures including: 

  • A new 120 m bus bridge (Charles Street Bus Bridge) over Graham Farmer Freeway connecting Charles Street directly to the existing James Street Bus Bridge via a bus only Busway
  • A new Mitchell Freeway off-ramp to Roe Street to replace James Street off-ramp
  • Approximately 500 m of new bus lanes on Charles Street
  • A new bus layover facility to complement operation of the nearby Perth Busport
  • A new shared path on Roe Street from Sutherland Street to Fitzgerald Street 
  • Intersection improvements and modifications at:
    • James Street / Fitzgerald Street
    • Roe Street / Fitzgerald Street
    • Charles Street / Newcastle Street
    • Charles Street / Carr Street
    • Newcastle Street / Cleaver Street

Key benefits

  • Reduce traffic congestion along James Street (west) and the south end of Fitzgerald Street
  • Establish a better bus service by providing on-time reliability improvements
  • Reduce travel time for passengers
  • Improve travel time for other road users 
  • Reduce bus operating costs
  • Maximise benefits of existing investments, such as the Perth Busport

 

Timeframe 

Construction start date – April 2016

Construction completion date – Late 2017
