Charles Street Bus Bridge and Busway

Overview

Aimed at improving the reliability of bus services throughout Northbridge, we will deliver a new bus bridge and bus priority measures on behalf of the Public Transport Authority.

The project is to be funded by the State Government and aims to:

  • Reduce traffic congestion along James Street (west) and the south end of Fitzgerald Street
  • Establish a better bus service by providing on-time reliability improvements
  • Reduce travel time for passengers
  • Improve travel time for other road users
  • Reduce bus operating costs
  • Maximise benefits of existing investments, such as the Perth Busport

Current status

The project reached a major milestone with the realignment of the Mitchell Freeway southbound exit, from James Street to Roe Street on Sunday 18 December at 6am.  The first bridge segments were launched in November and work along the western verge of Charles Street is almost complete.

Watch our video for an illustrative drive through of the newly realigned Roe Street exit from Mitchell Freeway.

Work hours are from 7am to 7pm, although some works may need to be completed out-of-hours.  Look out for traffic management and shared path closures through the North Perth, Northbridge and West Perth area.

Traffic impact

The following roadworks will be in place to facilitate this project:

Scope of works

This project will see the construction of a new bus bridge and associated bus priority measures. This will enable buses from Perth's northern and north-western suburbs to avoid congested roads, including four sets of traffic signals in the Northbridge area.

Current plans include:

  • A new 120 m bus bridge (Charles Street Bus Bridge) over Graham Farmer Freeway connecting Charles Street directly to the existing James Street Bus Bridge via a bus only Busway
  • A new Mitchell Freeway off-ramp to Roe Street to replace James Street off-ramp
  • Approximately 500 m of new bus lanes on Charles Street
  • A new bus layover facility to complement operation of the nearby Perth Busport
  • A new shared path on Roe Street from Sutherland Street to Fitzgerald Street
  • Intersection improvements and modifications at:
    • James Street / Fitzgerald Street;
    • Roe Street / Fitzgerald Street;
    • Charles Street / Newcastle Street;
    • Charles Street / Carr Street; and
    • Newcastle Street / Cleaver Street
