Night works continuing until 30 September 2017

Night works will continue on intermittent nights until 30 September 2017. Please see our latest notification for more information.

Night works - 14 to 31 August

We are carrying out a series of investigation works over the next three months in road reserve on Wanneroo Road between Joondalup Drive and Flynn Drive, at the intersections with Golf Links Drive, Carramar Road and Joondalup Drive. Some investigation activities must be undertaken at night to avoid major disruption to daytime traffic on Wanneroo Road and the associated risks to our workforce.

Community Reference Group – Call for nominations – August 2017

Main Roads and the Metropolitan Road Improvement Alliance are forming community reference groups for both the Wanneroo Road Widening – Joondalup Drive to Flynn Drive, and Wanneroo Road / Joondalup Drive Interchange projects. We are inviting expressions of interest from project stakeholders and local community organisations, groups and individuals to join one or both groups. For more information please view the following newsletter.

Investigation works in the road reserve – July 2017

To inform the design of the Wanneroo Road / Joondalup Drive Interchange, The Metropolitan Road Improvement Alliance (MRIA) will be undertaking a series of investigation works in the road reserve on and around the Wanneroo Road / Joondalup Drive intersection. Please see the following notification for more information.

The Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive Interchange project is funded by the Commonwealth and State Governments as part of a $2.3 billion investment in road and rail infrastructure, announced by Premier Mark McGowan on 7 May 2017.

The project will significantly reduce delays and improve safety at the 6th most congested intersection in the Perth Metropolitan Area. It will complement other significant upgrades in the area to improve traffic flow on Wanneroo Road - currently used as an alternate route to Mitchell Freeway – and help support residential and industrial development in Perth’s northern corridor.

Key benefits

  • Improve connectivity and travel times for local business and community
  • Improve safety
  • Support economic activity through provision of a more efficient road network
  • Complement other significant congestion-busting works including the widening of Wanneroo Road between Joondalup Drive and Flynn Drive and the upgrade of the Wanneroo Road and Ocean Reef Road interchange.

Scope of works

  • The scope of works includes:
  • Grade separation of Joondalup Drive going over Wanneroo Road with two lanes in each direction.
  • Modifications to intersections with local roads (Drovers Place and St Stephen Crescent).
  • A roundabout with two or three lanes.
  • Retaining walls and noise walls on intersection quadrants.
  • Road furniture, fencing, drainage, landscaping and street lighting.
  • Shared paths and bus facilities
  • Driveways and accommodation works

At the project development stage, we will work closely with the relevant Local Government Authorities to examine potential modifications to other local roads that will help address congestion on the approach to Wanneroo Road from the east and west.

Status, timing and procurement

The project is currently in the development phase. This work is currently being undertaken by the Metropolitan Road Improvement Alliance (MRIA) to:

  • Accelerate the planning process and allow us to commence procurement for a contract for final design and construction as soon as possible.
  • Ensure the scope of works for the interchange is consistent with the Wanneroo Road Widening project (Joondalup Drive to Flynn Drive) currently being undertaken by MRIA and that any interface and scheduling issues are taken into account.

Project development comprises:

  • Confirmation of scope in consultation with community and stakeholders. This includes consideration of additional works to the east and west of Wanneroo Road, including modifications the existing roundabout at Burns Beach Road and Joondalup Drive.

  • Obtaining project approvals and clearances required for construction commencement
  • Development of a concept design
  • Identification of land requirements and land acquisition.

Following completion of project development, it is likely that this project will be delivered as a Design & Construct contract. We will call for proposals in the usual way, with industry participants offered full and fair opportunity to tender for the contract.
