Karel Avenue Upgrade


The Karel Avenue Upgrade forms part of a $2.3 billion package of road and rail infrastructure works, funded by the State and Commonwealth Governments and announced by Premier Mark McGowan on 7 May 2017.

The $15 million project comprises upgrades to the Roe Highway and Karel Avenue interchange including widening of the existing Karel Avenue bridge. It will remove a bottleneck on the approach to the Jandakot Airport precinct, which when developed, is expected to support in excess of 8,000 jobs and 300 businesses. 


Key benefits

  • Provide additional capacity to cater for current and future traffic volumes
  • Improve access to Kwinana Freeway and Roe Highway
  • Support development of Jandakot Airport precinct
  • Complement other major road upgrades in the South Metropolitan Corridor including the widening of Kwinana Freeway and the Murdoch Drive Connection to Kwinana Freeway and Roe Highway


Scope of works

  • Upgrade Karel Avenue interchange with Roe Highway, including bridge widening
  • The widening of Karel Avenue between Farrington Road and Berrigan Drive either side of the interchange is currently under consideration but is subject to additional funding and consultation with key stakeholders


Status and timing

Metropolitan Road Improvement Alliance is currently progressing project development which comprises:

  • Confirmation of scope in consultation with community and stakeholders
  • Obtaining project approvals and clearances required for construction commencement
  • Development of a concept design
  • Identification of land requirements

The form of contract for final design and construction of the project is yet to be determined.
